ASHRAE® Nears Adoption of Standard 188P

Prevention of Legionellosis Associated with Building Water Systems

A New Legionella Standard

ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-conditioning Engineers, Inc., has proposed a new standard (ASHRAE Standard 188P, Prevention of Legionellosis Associated with Building Water Systems) to specify a standard practice for use by facility managers/owners to prevent Legionellosis in building water systems. Legionellosis is an infectious, sometimes fatal, disease caused by water contaminated with certain Legionella bacteria species.

What is required?

Standard 188P requires facility managers to take three basic steps:

Conduct a building survey to determine its risk characterization

Develop a HACCP plan for Legionella control in all building water systems

Document the HACCP plan with all steps followed
